Inverness Guide
Best known for the lake nearby, and the monster that is said to inhabit it, Inverness is the largest town in the Scottish Highlands. Roughly 160 miles north of Edinburgh, and surrounded by the rugged Caledonian mountains, Inverness is an important historic place that is a great place to visit either as a destination in its own right, or as the starting point for a holiday exploring the whole region.
Amongst the many claims to fame proffered by Inverness, perhaps the most impressive is that it was for many years the seat of the Scottish throne, and quite close by, you can visit the castle of Macbeth! Other traditional highland castles nearby include Cawdor - one of the most impressive, and Urquart Castle. The latter, which overlooks Loch Ness was once one of the largest fortresses in all of Scotland, but is now pretty much in ruins, although it is one of the most photographed buildings in the area, and a popular haunt amongst monster hunters who often congregate around the castle in the early morning as they search for Nessie.
