Teesside Guide

The northeast of England is home to many of its best hidden and often overlooked attractions. From the industrial cities of Sunderland and Middlesborough to the rolling countryside of the borders, and the historic university city of Durham, there is plenty to see and do in the Teesside area.

Amongst the most visited attractions in the UK, Hadrian's Wall, the border defence constructed in Roman times to keep out the Scottish invaders is an incredible sight to see, and one of the main reasons for visiting the region. This wall, up to 3 metres tall is, sadly, largely in ruins, but it is still possible to get a feel for how impressive it must have been nearly two thousand years ago when it was first built.

Other sights to see around Teesside include Darlington - the closest town, where there are many interesting bars and clubs offering a great night out, the coastal resort town of Hartlepool with its Victorian arcades and windswept beaches, and the small country town of Sedgefield - home of Prime Minister Tony Blair, and a place where he can regularly be seen away from the pressures of office.

Sightseeing around Teesside

Durham Cathedral - One of England's best cathedrals, Durham is surrounded by beautiful gardens and has an impressive museum.
Durham Castle - Dominating the skyline of historic Durham, the castle is the centre of the city, and is home to an impressive museum collection.
Sunderland National Glass Centre - Sunderland was once the centre of the glass industry, and this museum has regular demonstrations of glass blowing and other craftsmanship as well as a great shop selling top class glassware.
Washington Old Hall - The principal stately home in the region, Washington Old Hall is the ancestral home of George Washington's family, and a must see attraction for American tourists.
Reg Vardy Art Gallery - Part of the University, but open to the general public throughout most of the year, the Reg Vardy gallery is home to a large collection of modern art and has won many awards.
